Asa Calow

Asa Calow is a creative technologist, civic hacker, self-taught biologist and a founder of the Manchester Digital Laboratory (AKA MadLab), a grassroots innovation organisation based in Manchester City Centre. He founded the first DIYbio group in the UK and organises regular pop-up community laboratories and workshops, covering everything from amateur synthetic biology to cellular gastronomy. With over a decade’s industry experience he has worked on a variety of social and commercial projects: from intranet services for 3i and AstraZeneca through to hardware prototyping and the co-design of mobile health technologies with hard-to-reach communities in North West England. Asa runs MadLab’sSpeculative Futures Programme, of which community biotechnology is a key element.
